Poverty-stricken and illiterate, Manny joined the Marine Corps at 17 despite not being able to pass the recruitment test unaided. He performed admirably in Vietnam, but his war experiences left him a changed man, suffering from acute post-traumatic stress disorder. After he fatally assaulted a woman while in a dissociative state, he was represented by an alcoholic lawyer who used the “n” word. Despite his severe mental illness and heroic service in Vietnam, Manny was executed by the state of California.
