Bird & Bird has hired Creative Technology’s former global head of legal Anan Sivananthan as an IP partner in Singapore.
Sivananthan worked at Creative Technology, a Singapore-based consumer electronics company, for 17 years. He first joined the company as director of legal services in 2000 from Singaporean firm Drew & Napier where he was an IP litigator. He was promoted to associate vice president and head of the global legal team at Creative in 2007.
His practice focuses on contentious IP matters, particularly on patent litigation and anti-counterfeiting.
Creative is a long-term client of Bird & Bird and Sivananthan has worked with a number of Bird & Bird IP partners across the firm.
Sivananthan’s appointment is part of the firm’s strategy to build a full-service capability within its IP group and boost its IP offering across Asia.
“Anan brings a different perspective and expertise to the group, given his knowledge base and strong commercial insights as to what the clients’ needs are, and how to design and implement a global patent monetisation strategy,” said Matthew Laight, Bird & Bird Asia Pacific IP head.
Allen & Overy is another UK firm that has recently expanded its IP practice in Asia with a senior appointment from an in-house team. Last week, the firm announced its appointment of AstraZeneca general counsel for China David Shen in Shanghai as an IP partner.
